About

Just a glimpse into who we are...
This is the companion site to our self-paced, self-directed, gamified history class website. It’s where students of the Vista High School Personal Learning Academy and, more specifically, 11th grade students in Mr. Dickerson’s History class, post their Digital Portfolio Updates as assigned in the Weekly Expeditions.
The goal, of course, is to begin to change the mindset away from tests and towards tangible, visible demonstrations of learning. Demonstrations that evolve with every iteration and can clearly show how skills and understanding grow over time.

Background:

The Vista High School Personal Learning Academy (The PLA) is a pilot program that began in the 2015/2016 school year, and was created to find an alternative to traditional instruction. Of course, not everybody agrees on what ‘traditional’ is, or that we need an alternative to it…and they certainly don’t agree about what that alternative should be. As it turns out, that’s a tough knot to untie.

That’s okay. Vista has decided that starting down the path toward something different and, hopefully, something more relevant and engaging for students, is a priority, so here we are. Now in year two, we are 8 teachers at the junior level and 3 at the senior level, and we are focused on developing a unique, interdisciplinary learning environment where students understand the connections between different aspects of their learning…and their lives.

The focus is on empowering young people to take greater responsibility for their learning by engaging them in a process that is relevant and, because there is greater choice in both what is learned and how that learning occurs, engaging.

Year 1 was an important one. So many lessons learned, many of them hard ones. But it was a necessary step on the road that leads to growth, and I expect year 2 will be similar. Different lessons, surely, but important ones nonetheless.
